EHS Committee

Membership and organisation

The EHS Committee includes at least one representative of each Member Company, to exchange information on non-competitive topics related to health, safety and the environment.

Main issues

The EHS Committee is actively involved in the implementation of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), and in particular in the BREF and BAT Conclusions for Non-Ferrous Metals.

The classification and assessment of alloys is an important subject that EUROALLIAGES follows within mainly working groups of Eurometaux.

Another important topic followed by the Committee is the developments within the authorisation framework of authorisation of high-temperature Coal Tar Pitch (ht CTP).

The monitoring oh the regulatory developments related to Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) is also covered.

Before the first registration deadline in 2010, EUROALLIAGES EHS Committee has been active within EIMAG, the group of Alloys Industries involved in the debate about alloy classification and the treatment of alloys in REACH: alloys are different from their components and do not display the same characteristics; accordingly, if they are classified, they must be classified independently from their components and on their own merits.
EUROALLIAGES has been very much involved in the debate leading to the adoption of the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), and has intensively lobbied the EU authorities to ensure that, within the adoption process of REACH, the interests of the ferro-alloy producers are preserved.

In the past, the EHS Committee commissioned a study to assess the ecotoxicity of alloys and related slags performed by 2 laboratories (SINTEF in Trondheim, Norway and LISEC in Genk, Belgium) and sponsored by the ICDA, the IMoA and VANITEC.
